Dreams

Dreams and more...
A dream, or a series of events or images that happen in one's mind while
sleeping, is called - сон (n., m.) in Russian.
See declension table below.
Synonym: сновидение (n., n.)
Please note that dream also means "hope" in English, which is different in
Russian. Dream=hope=мечта. (n., f.)
Also, "сон" means the resting state, sleep: Ты меня не разбудишь - у меня
обычно крепкий сон. (You won't wake me up, usually I'm a heavy sleeper).

Possible expressions:
1. Dream as "a movie":
видеть во сне кого-либо, что-либо - to dream about someone, something, literally: "to see someone, something in your dream";
Example: Я часто вижу во сне мою бабушку. I often dream about my granny. (Literally: I often see my granny in my dream)

сниться - images that you dream about, literally: to dream oneself.
Example: Мне часто снится моя бабушка. I often dream about my granny. (Literally: My granny often dreams herself to me)
NB: In comparison with "видеть во сне", "сниться" is the more popular and common word, while "видеть во сне" might seem pathetic or literary. Not used without objects, so complete phrases like "Я видел во сне." or "Мне снится." are not correct.

присниться - the same meaning as "сниться", but the grammatical usage is a bit different.

видеть сон (о чём-либо, о ком-либо) - to dream (about someone, something), literally: "to see a dream". Can be used with or without objects. In case there's an object, the meaning is the same as "видеть во сне".
Example: Я видел сон о моей бабушке. I dreamed about my granny. (Literally: I saw a dream about my granny)

вещий сон - the dream that comes true;
кошмар - nightmare;
хороший сон - good dream;
плохой сон - bad dream;
страшный сон - frightful dream;
повторяющийся сон - recurring dream;

2. Sleep as the resting state:
глубокий сон - deep sleep;
иметь крепкий, глубокий сон - to be a heavy sleeper;
иметь неспокойный, некрепкий, тревожный, чуткий сон - to be a light sleeper;
тревожный сон - troubled sleep
спать как убитый - sleep like a log, literally: to sleep as a dead man;
(делать что-либо) во сне, сквозь сон - to sleep through something, to do something while sleeping.
Example: Я проснулся и вспомнил, что ночью сквозь сон слышал какие-то странные вопли в соседней квартире. I woke up and remembered hearing some weird yells from the next flat in my sleep.

со сна, спросонья (adverb), спросонок (adverb) - colloquial, being only half-awake, half asleep.

ложиться спать (imperf.asp.) - to be going to sleep. Perf.asp - лечь спать - to go to sleep.
засыпать (imperf.asp.) - (to be in the process) of falling asleep. Perf.asp. - заснуть, уснуть - to fall asleep.

дремать (imperf.asp.) - (to be in the process) of dozing off; Perf.asp. - вздремнуть - to doze off.
высыпаться (imperf.asp.) - to (permanently) sleep enough; Perf.asp. - выспаться - to sleep enough.
Correspondingly: не высыпаться/не выспаться.
Example: Я в течение недели совершенно не высыпаюсь, зато в субботу могу спать хоть до трёх и прекрасно выспаться. I sleep absolutely not enough during the week, but in Saturday I can sleep in for example till three and perfectly sleep myself out.

как спалось? - how did you sleep (well?)?
сонный - sleepy;
сонливость (n., f.) - drowse;
спящий - sleeping;
бессонница (n., f.) - sleeplessness;

3. Figurative:
вечный сон - the eternal rest;
как во сне - dreamily;
ему/ей это и не снилось (ему/ей это даже не снилось) - he/she never even dreamed about that;
проснуться - awake.
Example: А что у нас с этим проектом? Ну ты проснулся, это же надо было делать на той неделе! (What's going on with this project? - Awake, it should has been done last week!)

кому-либо что-либо приснилось - someone must have dreamt something.
Example: Может, мне это, конечно, приснилось, но я почти уверен, что мы обсуждали это в том месяце. (I must have dreamt it, of course, but I'm quite sure that we discussed it last month.)

потерять сон из-за чего-либо, кого-либо - to lose sleep over/about something;

4. Additional:
переспать - to have sex with someone, to sleep around. Depreciatingly.

5. The scenery:
будильник - alarm clock.
Поставить, завести будильник на 7 часов утра - to set the alarm for 7 am.
спальный вагон, СВ (read as "эСВэ") - sleeping car (in a train), a railway carriage containing berths for passengers.
But! There're the following types of railway cars:
- сидячий (seats like in a plane, or other seats but for sitting only, there's no place to lie down),
- плацкартный (contains berths where one can lie down and sleep, but there's no separate compartments),
- купе (contains separate compartments with 4 berths in each),
- СВ, or спальный вагон, (the same as купе, but only 2 berths in each compartment).
So, as you can see, it's supposed to sleep not only in СВ, but also in плацкартный вагон and вагон-купе.

спальня (n., f.) - bed-room;
снотворное (n., n., but declined as adjective) - soporific medicine.
Example: Я так переживала, что пришлось выпить (принять) снотворное. I worried so much, so I had to take a soporific medicine.

ночная рубашка (n., f.) - nightgown;
делать что-либо на ночь (перед сном) - to do something before going to bed.

Example #2: Вам придётся принимать это лекарство ежедневно, на ночь. You'll have to take this medicine each day before going to bed.

лунатик (n., m.) - sleep-walker;
совааворонок - in terms of sleep, "owl" and "lark", persons who prefer falling asleep and waking up earlier or later. The "middle" category, a mixture of "owl" and "lark", is sometimes called as голубь ("pigeon").
соня (n., f.) - sleepyhead (someone who sleeps too much, or likes to sleep)
Example: Мой муж такой соня! My husband is such a sleepyhead!
сонник (n., m.) - a book of dream interpretations;
толкование снов - process of dreams interpretating;
храп (n., m.) - snore;
Example: Представляешь, она храпит! - Да ладно?! (Imagine, she snores! - Oh no!).
NB: It's not correct to say something like : "У неё храп", sounds like a diagnosis.

беруши (n., pl.) - earplugs, small things that someone puts in his ears not to hear outside sounds (like snoring, for example);
ночной горшок, ночная ваза - chamber-pot. Of course, it's absolutely not a common thing in Russia. :)
NB: In this case, ваза is more refined word than горшок. But they are not the synonyms.

тихий час - a period when kids sleep in kindergardens in the middle of a day.
